Fished the Madison and Yellowstone this week. The Avantt was a dream to fish, cast effortlessly with Orvis Pro line, and handled strong fish in fast currents nicely using 3x. Very happy with the rod.
I first cast the Advantt 2 this winter at a fly show and I knew I was in trouble. After spending less than 5 minutes with it, it just felt right. I was delivering accurate casts at a distance and the feel was right up my alley. I love the "special wells grip" it's slightly smaller diameter than a traditional full wells grip giving you more of that finesse feel. I purchased the 9' 5wt as my work horse trout rod. I absolutely love it. I honestly feel it's made me a better caster, the power with softness is amazing ( perfect recovery) and you can really lay out some line no false cast just a little haul and the line really moves! I don't regret the purchase at all! But I also have NEVER regretted buying any Thomas and Thomas rod!
This rod is truly an all around rod for PA. I’ve used it on everything from places like the Delaware, Spring creek and small tight mountain brooks. The rod handles any fly I tie on it weather it be small or large dries, hoppers, nymphs or dry dropper rigs. I was hesitant that a 4 weight may not be great for wind or heavier bugs but the avantt 2 is a workhorse. The SA amplitude smooth infinity pairs great with this rod and provides a good mix between feel, delicate presentations, and versatility for dries, nymphs, or wind. I tried the SA amplitude smooth trout but the rod looses all its power with it. The SA amplitude smooth MPX also works great with this rod but makes presentations a little more aggressive. Overall if you want a do it all rod that won’t kill your arm after a day of fishing I’d put the Thomas and Thomas avantt 2 9’ 4wt at the top of your list
