Trout Spey rods -- also called Micro Spey or Switch rods -- are 2-5 wt, two-handed rods that go 10.5 - 11 feet long. While smaller and lighter than traditional spey rods, the cast is the same. Used to swing flies to trout (think big, carnivorous browns), this technique has a dedicated following. While a "niche" segment at the the moment, we suspect this technique will continue to grow. It has more shakes than Shake Shack. The movement comes from three places. First, the materials themsleves shimmer and pulse. Second, the articualtion allows the fly to achieve a swimming motion. Third, the shape of the spun deer hair head creates random movements that mimic a swimming -- and possibly wounded -- baitfish. The size 2 has two hooks and measures ~5". We dare you to try it.
