View full detailsThis is a Rod Hamilton variation of the Bonefish Junk fly pattern originally desgined by Charlie Craven. A bit of interesting history…... as new materials and ever more creative brains are uncovered in the fly-tying world, progress is made. The chassis of this fly is the Gotcha, which is a pattern designed by Jim McVay in the back of a cab in the Bahamas using the yellow carpet fur for the wing. As recounted in “Bonefish Fly Patterns” by Mr Brown, the carpet was later replaced by craft fur. This fly has been a bellwether ever since. Another fun fact relayed by Mr McVay...the name was the result of Jim and his fishing pals yelling “Gotcha” so many times during a day of fishing. It has spawned many pattern variations from brilliant minds like Mr Craven who can masterfully introduce new materials and new design ideas to take something to the next level. So, if the original Gotcha is an F150, the Bonefish Junk is a Raptor. You choose. Mr Hamilton’s variation steps back a bit in ways that result in a pattern that was easier to tie for him. Given that he’s spent a lifetime focused on the DIY flats angler, it makes sense that Mr Hamilton would look for ways to reduce tying steps. In any event, don't head to Bahamas without any of these flies. This fly is tied on a Gama SL-11 3H. The Gamakatsu SL-11 3H is one of the strongest and sharpest hooks available, and worth every penny when you hook-up with a fish of a lifetime! This fly is also tied with a weed guard, which can easily be trimmed off.

Adding the glass bead imitates the tiny buble of gas the midge uses to float itself from the bottom to the top of the water. Fish this pattern at any depth. Too often, Stonefly patterns become too fat and disproportionate by adding lead wire underbodies. This multi wired body offers some segmentation using two color wires wrapped together. Fish this pattern below an indicator with Fluorocarbon or in tandem with a Prince Nymph.

If a fish doesn't grab the fly on the dead drift, they will often take it as a rising caddis. The olive soft hackle is also effective in lakes as a damsel nymph imitation.
