Because it is as effective today as it was back in 1959, when Cal Bird first tied this fly to imitate a caddis pupa.The pattern is considered to be an Attractor Pattern.     The Copper J (compare to a Copper John) is a combination of three very effective nymph patterns, the prince nymph, the brassie, and the pheasant tail.     Based on Colorado's world-class guide and tyer Landon Mayer's Mini Leech, this is a jig pattern that will produce in many scenarios including: High water conditions, Low light, Dead drifted as a point fly, On the swing at the end of a drift, or Stripped, either by itself or as the trailer in a two-fly streamer rig. Leeches are a high protein meal for fish.  While many of us think about leeches as the large, worm-like slugs we saw in the classic Stand By Me, most freshwater leeches are small, highly active swimmers.  Landon's choice of micro pine squirrel and osterich herl mimic both of these characteristics in a way that is often irresisable to fish.  Consider all colors -- Brown, Black, and Rust.     With the evolution of synthetic materials in fly tying, designers experimented by replacing the standard natural materials with newly introduced fibers. Ice Dub is likely the most popular of those materials. With as many uses as it has, Mike Mercer found a use beyond others and a way to re-introduce the classic Prince Nymph with the same acceptance as the original. The Psycho Prince was developed using Ice Dub rather than Peacock, giving the pattern a more color diversity and enabling anglers to better match the hatch. A brilliant design.
