Baetis mayflies hatch throughout most of the year, which makes the blue-winged olive pattern an excellent trout fly to carry in your fly box year around. Trout can be fickle, so carry several "flavors" of baetis, including the blue-winged olive extended body, the blue-winged olive hatchmaster and the blue-winged olive thorax.

The Sulphur Dun is the Eastern equivalent to the Pale Morning Dun of the West. Sulphurs usually hatch in the evening, (although they can hatch mid-day on cloudy days) early in the season, with prolific numbers of mayflies hatching at a time. If this pattern doesn't produce, trail a PMD Emerger (available in our nymph store) behind a dry fly.

The Chubby Chernobyl is a big improvement on a Chernobyl Ant, adding a bouyant and highly visible wing to a fly that already catches tons of fish. This fly is an attractor used to immiate lots of bugs....from a stonefly to a beetle.  This fly is a great choice of fly to use as a dry dropper, since it can easily float most tungsten bead nymphs.

Two layers of foam are better than one! The added floatation will help suspend heavier droppers, or multiple droppers. We add a mottled wing which can help contrast. This is one of those flies that -- after a day on the water -- you'll wonder "How'd I ever fish without this?"

This fly is likely considered as the same "species" as a Chubby Chernobyl, but related in the same way that a large timber wolf is related to a wiley coyote. This is the coyote; perfect for holding up a small dropper and small enough to fish by itself. This fly is desgined to float well and be highly visible.

The Trico Mayfly (Tricorythodes Minutus) vary in size from #18 to #24. Males emerge in the evening, and spend the night in a local shrub along the river. Females hatch in the morning, and become spinners within several hours. While the females hatch, the males molt into spinners, forming a massive cloud of flying trout food. Trout will begin to feed on these tiny mayflies as they fall to the water, the females to lay eggs, the males, spent. The trick to catching fish during the trico hatch is to cast your fly in the exact feeding lane of a trout. Because of the sheer abundance of available food, rising trout will seldom move laterally to eat. Use 6x or smaller tippet.

Another brilliant pattern from the vise of Mr Egan. This is not a subtle fly and is packed full of high-floating CDC fibers for both the wing and the hackle. As with other CDC flies, best to use a floatant like Loon Lochsa, Loon Top Ride, or Frog's Fanny.
